Word Up - The Blends (onsets, and rimes)

Purchased here are the links to a digital  list of the common blends of the letters of the alphabet. Recognizing and being able to sound these out are the first clues toward saying a new or unfamiliar words (decoding words ).

Mastering blends is the third most fundamental step towards mastering words. Blends are the various combinations of letters we call digraphs and trigraphs which often form the onsets (the beginning parts of words) and the rimes (the ending part of words). Used together, the two elements form the fundamental building blocks for all words. Mastering blends  sets students up for success, a decoder ring of sorts. With such skills, students will improve the spelling and pronunciation of new and unfamiliar words..

The cards can be printed and used as flashcards. Each card includes a blend or combination, its pronunciation, and types of words that share the sound.

Please note that mastering this material may require practice outside the classroom, as classroom environments can sometimes include background noise, which may affect recall. Research suggests that it is easier to remember information in a quieter setting.
